Website lists Warwick among RI's 'Best Places to Live'

Warwick has again placed sixth on a website’s recent list of “The 10 Best Places to Live in Rhode Island for 2020.”

The rankings were compiled by HomeSnacks, a site that uses data to rank cities and towns across the country. The city repeated its ranking from 2019.

According to HomeSnacks, Warwick has an unemployment percentage of 5.2 percent and a median income of $70,490. The site also says that Warwick is the highest populated place in the state that made the top 10 list.

Kingston, Ashaway, Hope Valley, Cumberland Hill and Wakefield-Peacedale are the five locations to rank ahead of Warwick. The final four to crack the top 10 are Cranston, Narragansett Pier, Newport and Westerly.

Warwick received the highest overall score on the list with a nine out of 10, but still placed on the bottom half of the 10 finalists. Warwick’s median home value ranked 19th best in the state at $213,300, which could be one reason why the city is as far down on the list as it is.

Bob DeGregorio, a broker associate and office manager for Solcum Realty in Warwick, said the city is one of the best places to live in terms of value.

“Warwick seems to be the better bang for your buck – always has been in my 30 years in real estate,” he said.

Interstate 95 cuts through the center of the city and offers easy access in and out for commuters. T.F. Green Airport also makes Warwick a potential landing spot for anyone who frequently flies. Stated as a highlight in Warwick’s ranking, the HomeSnacks site says that for anyone traveling by plane, it is likely the first place within the state that they will see. Its central location, DeGregorio said, works to the advantage of the city.

DeGregorio works across Rhode Island and is also licensed in Connecticut and Massachusetts, but the Warwick native is an advocate for the city he grew up in.

“I’ve lived here all my life and I’m still here, he said. “Almost 60 years later, so that should say something.”

A statement from Mayor Joseph J. Solomon’s office reads: “As far as the mayor is concerned, Warwick is number one. Mayor Solomon will continue to maintain our number one status in the state of Rhode Island.”

The HomeSnacks website says that they reviewed data of median home values, income, unemployment rate and a few other factors to make their decision.

As far as future plans for the city, the mayor’s release states: “We’re paving roads, bringing new energy efficiencies through the city, welcoming new businesses and seeing new residential and commercial development. We are improving our parks and playgrounds, offering new recreational opportunities for residents of all ages, and have expanded programming for seniors at the Pilgrim Senior Center. We’re continuing to find savings for our taxpayers and have been making great strides to ensure the fiscal health of the city.”
