Winman opens first STEAM lab

Winman Junior High School opened its first STEAM Lab on Thursday, March 22.

Winman's STEAM Lab and Makerspace developed out of a $91,000 grant submission through the Champlin Foundations; the grant was awarded in December of 2016. This money was supported along with financial and district support by Dr. Philip Thornton and Warwick Public Schools. The final product shows the efforts to refurbish Winman’s dated materials processing lab into a state-of-the-art STEAM Lab.

The grant proposal was conceived and submitted by art teacher Susan Morgan and library media specialist Mary Tow. However, many of Winman’s teachers and staff contributed to the overall project and design. The vision for the space was guided and supported by Winman’s principal, Joanne Pelletier, as well as many other administrators, teachers and staff members, including the maintenance, technology, clerical and accounting departments.

Winman's STEAM Lab and Makerspace will enable the school community to embrace a culture and mindset of learning through design-thinking and hands-on projects. Winman’s dedicated and knowledgeable teachers are the vital component to the success of this lab. Everyone is excited to start working with students on these highly engaging projects.
