With acquisition, Coutu Bros. doubles moving business

Coutu Bros. Movers, located in Warwick since 1940, has nearly doubled its capacity with the purchase of MGM Express Movers, of North Kingstown.

The acquisition enabled Coutu to increase the number of trucks from four to seven and the number of employees from 10 to 17, according to Coutu president Bob Romano, who has owned the company since 2000. MGM was founded in 1992.

The new company will operate under the Coutu name out of its location at 2 Greco Lane, Warwick.

“The acquisition of MGM will allow Coutu Bros. to expand our ever-growing presence in the South County area and to fuel our growth into the future,” Romano said. “I am excited to add MGM customers to our growing family of satisfied customers.”

Marc Lewis, who sold MGM to Coutu Bros. said, “I am excited to be selling to the Romano family. They run a top-notch operation and I know my customers will be taken care of.”

Coutu Bros. is believed to be the only independent moving company in Rhode Island to offer online bookings and climate-controlled storage. Coutu Bros. is not a franchise or agent for any national moving company.

Its storage facility offers fire and smoke alarms, motion detectors, 24-hour video surveillance, climate control and storage vaults for clients.

Customers who are building a home, renovating their home, between moves, or relocating for business reasons can store items for as short a time as overnight, or as long as they need.

Coutu Bros. serves both residential and commercial customers locally and nationally and specializes in short-notice moves. Romano says the company can move a customer the day the customer calls, based on availability.

The company is licensed by the Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission and is a member of the American Moving & Storage Association, the Massachusetts Movers Association, the Rhode Island Trucking Association and the Better Business Bureau.
