Although it’s not mentioned, healthcare costs for active city employees should be a big part of the equation. What do we know about that ? The Beacon previously reported Warwick is self-insured, meaning there are no insurance premiums, and the actual incurred costs are paid by the city, through WB Community Health. The Beacon said little else. After doing some research, it appears money to the tune of $100+ million per year is funneled through WB Community Health. This is a non-profit with just 2 (two) employees. They don’t even have a physical address, or at least one they want to advertise, according to the latest iteration of their website. They recently abandoned their last known office location on Jefferson Blvd. Inexplicably, this is what has the lock on healthcare for many towns across RI, including Warwick. If what they deliver is all true, then this could be the greatest thing ever. Or not, because there is an absence of information. We just don’t know. No one wants to talk about this. When these kinds of things live in the shadows, it really doesn’t matter in the end what kind of contracts you have.
