Alex - love your passion and support of high school sports. But the notion that "private schools and prep programs were snagging kids away left and right" is simply not accurate, and does not come close to explaining the ongoing and alarming deterioration of athletics in the city, especially on the boys' side. No one from a prep school is "snagging" anyone from Pilgrim or TG to go play hockey. Rather, Warwick's public schools are now full of pudgy, academically under achieving kids who would rather watch video games than play sports. Those who do participate aspire to mediocrity. How else to explain the 6th (Pilgrim) and 8th (TG) largest schools in the state opting to play basketball in Division II? Of the seventeen Division I schools, Pilgrim is larger than eleven, yet is perfectly content to remain in a lower division. This cuts across all male sports at both TG and Pilgrim, and does little but reinforce this culture of under achieving mediocrity. Best of luck to the coop team and, again, I'm glad the kids can play. But it remains an embarrassment that two schools of this size are relegated to such things. And the truly scary part is that, when Warwick does go to a single high school and becomes one of the largest in New England, it won't get much better.
