The appearance of a crane to the former Apponaug Mill water tower last week had some people wondering if the village landmark would soon be dismantled to make room for the Apponaug bypass. The tower will come down, but probably not until 2014, Vincent Palumbo, managing engineer for the Department of Transportation, said Monday. He said the state expects to advertise for bids for the $32 million bypass project, aimed at reducing village traffic congestion, next August. Construction would probably start in 2014 and last two construction seasons with completion in 2015. As for what was happening last week, Verizon leases the tower for its wireless network. Palumbo said devices on the former water tower would be relocated to a new tower that Verizon would erect near the police station. That tower would then also be used for city communications in place of the existing police tower. (Warwick Beacon photo)

It's a shame this is being taken down. I hope it will be relocated somewhere. It's a part of the towns history!
