That’s what Aldrich librarian Sandra Savella, right, had to say Tuesday as she provided orientation for Christine Murphy, who started Monday as the librarian at Gorton. Savella was one of those leading the charge to restore funding for a Gorton librarian after the funds were stripped from the budget last year. The funds were restored with passage of the school budget in April. Among programs run by the school librarians is a 3-day presentation on the use of different media and instruction on Internet safety.

What a waste of money. Kids can just use Google. If they have trouble with that, there is the Public Library. Send these hacks packing.

"Justanidiot" Yeah that's great if every child had access to a public library (transportation, someone to accompany them, etc) but that's not always the case. As for "just using Google" , sure we all use it when we're in a pinch and need quick info but it's more than that. We need to teach kids how to use and navigate approved library databases because once they move on to high school or university, Google is not going to cut it. Since most of these databases cannot be accessed from a home computer without a personal account, school libraries are the only source of this information that students have.

Kudos to Gorton. Eliminating the Gorton librarian was one of the stupidest actions ever taken by this School Committee. How a Committee member, whose first charge is to effect policies to improve educational outcomes, could vote for denying students a full time librarian is beyond the pale. I'd encourage all to search the Beacon on 'Gorton librarian' and re-read the remarks of some of the members that supported this boneheaded decision.
