(Dull soap opera)
Michael Douglas plays a rude, self-centered, bitter, ornery widower who runs a real estate firm and is trying to sell his own house at an outrageous price. He is living in one of his rental properties, where one of his renters (Diane Keaton) is a widow trying to take control of her life. She sings at a local bistro, where she usually ends up crying at the end of a song.
His son drops off his 10-year-old granddaughter, who he has never seen, on his way to jail for eight months. Grandpa wants little to do with the kid and tries to pawn her off on his neighbor. A love/hate relationship develops between the two, as she tries to soften the old grouch and he tries to encourage her to advance her singing career. Ho-hum.
We failed to get the point of the movie, except to say that the old Scrooge had a redemption and everybody lived happily ever after.
Frankie Valli makes a cameo appearance as a club owner.
Rated PG-13 with minor profanity and major boredom. A waste of two good actors.
