Members of the Apponaug Girls Softball league were desperately looking for a sign, and it finally came to them.
The team is making a move from their old Winslow Field location off Groveland Avenue to the new Winslow Field home off Airport Road to accommodate the T.F. Green runway extension project. The league wanted to bring a piece of their past with them, their “Welcome to Winslow Park” sign. However, sometime around August 9 and 10, it went missing.
“We’re assuming someone took it thinking it was going to get demolished along with everything else,” said Linda Chevian, an Apponaug Girls Softball board member, in a Warwick Beacon story last Thursday.
Now, thanks to that Beacon write-up, Apponaug Girls Softball is happy to report that their sign has been returned and is hanging proudly at their new facility. After seeing Thursday’s article, a resident from the old Winslow Park area called Apponaug Girls Softball league president Bob Chevian to let them know he had the sign.
The neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, frequently walked his dog through Winslow Park. Once the construction crews started demolition of the park to realign Main Avenue, the neighbor went to retrieve the sign and then safely stored it at his home.
“We hung it up Saturday as we were at the new fields conducting tryouts for our travel league,” wrote Chevian in an email yesterday. “We have the sign back just in time as we are holding an in-person registration and open house for our fall ball season this Saturday.”

I'm glad to see they've recovered their sign. Looks great!
I would like to make a comment.
Should the new ball and soccer fields (off Airport Rd.) still be named 'Winslow Park'? The reason why I'm asking is because where I grew up (directly across from the old ball fields on Gertrude Ave.), there were two original hardball fields donated by Mr. Winslow from Warwick back in the late forties or early fifties.
I am currently retired.
It just seems like we're losing some of our history and roots where we grew up.
