Hawks reclaim state swim title

Posted

The Bishop Hendricken swim team reached the top of the podium for the first time in two years last weekend when it beat North Kingstown to claim the RIIL State Championship at Brown University. It was the team’s 34th championship and its eighth in 10 years.

“It’s very important and very special. The banner at our home pool has one spot, one spot for 2024, one more spot to put a championship on. We have been talking about it all season so it’s great to see it come to fruition. Today, our team came together. It was not one person,” said senior Damon Buchanan. “The depth was really important. We lost a bunch of seniors last year, but we had other people to fill in their spots. I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

“We lost my freshman year, lost last year. So I’m just overwhelmed. We put in everything, our hard work paid off,” added junior Tristan Jordan.

Here are some of the results from the afternoon:

BOYS

Hendricken’s Aidan Curry, Tristan Andrews, Buchanan and Tristan Jordan combined to win the 200 yard freestyle relay.

Jordan later finished second in the 50 free for the Hawks as well as third in the 100 free. Curry took third in the breaststroke.

Hendricken’s relay team of Alex Sulyma, Buchanan, Andrews and Jordan later took third in the 400 free. Sulyma, Aidan Curry, Ryan Voccio and Noah Worth placed fourth for Hendricken in the 200 medley relay. Sulyma took fourth in the 500 free as well.

Sulyma later took fifth in the 200 individual medley while Curry placed fifth in the 100 free.

Buchanan took sixth for the Hawks in the 200 free as well as sixth in the 500 free. Marco Ialongo took sixth in the breaststroke for Hendricken.

Tristan Andrews wrapped up ninth place for the Hawks in the 200 free, while Ialongo finished ninth in the IM. Voccio also finished ninth in the 500 free. Voccio finished 10th in the butterfly.

MIXED

Pilgrim’s Connor Reese, Allison Shaheen, Nolan Reese and Charlotte McPherson combined to take fifth in the mixed 200 yard freestyle relay unified event.

GIRLS

Toll Gate’s relay team of Katelyn Watson, Tate Payne, Samantha Lin and Emily Furtado took 17th in the 400 free while Pilgrim’s Holly Cameron, Madison Ventura, Charlotte McPherson and Abigail Killilea finished 18th.

West’s Bianca Ascencio finished 11th in the 200 IM. East was led by Elain Wu, who took 13th in the 100 free.
