Work has started on restoring the dunes along Strand Avenue facing Brush Neck Cove, which will be closed off as part of a walking path to the Oakland Beach beach. The project includes the removal of foundations and pier pilings, remnants from storms and hurricanes, replenishment of the cove beach with an area for launching kayaks and canoes The project is made possible with a 2018 $400,000 Department of Environmental grant that is being matched with $260,000 from a city Community Development Block Grant from the federal government. The project includes a paved parking lot, benches and a “beach mat” to provide handicapped accessibility to the beach. The job turned out to be somewhat more than initially planned when a December storm accompanied by high tide washed out a section of the road and existing parking area. Cardi Construction is doing the job that is projected to be completed this summer. The area will be fenced off during the work.
