Democratic candidate for mayor Carel Callahan Bainum kept her distance as she gathered signatures on her nomination papers in order to qualify as a candidate. Mayoral candidates need the signatures of 200 registered Warwick voters to qualify. Born and raised in Warwick, Bainum was self-employed in real estate for more than 40 years. In the 1970s she served as the city’s animal control supervisor, a job that came to an end when she refused to obey the command of then then police chief to euthanize dogs that hadn’t been adopted after several weeks. This is her second run for mayor. She says she is anxious for the opportunity to serve the people of Warwick and plans to use a 40-foot motorhome as her campaign headquarters that will make a tour of Warwick neighborhoods. She urged voters to visit her website: Carelfor mayor.com and contact her at warwickdogbeach@email.com. One of the first to sign her papers was Sunnyview Drive neighbor Pauline Kiernan whose dogs Uki (that’s the big one) and Bully were there to watch. (Warwick Beacon photo)
