Catherine Mary (Lovely) Smith, 93, of North Pleasant Street, West Warwick, former resident of Warwick for many years, died August 13, 2021 at her home. She was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband, George A. Smith, who died in 2018 after 69 years of marriage.
Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Joseph C. Lovely I, owner of Lovely’s Diner and Catherine M. (McCullough) Lovely. She had lived more recently in West Warwick for three years with her daughter and her family. Catherine took great pride in being a homemaker and a gourmet cook and expert baker, with family members often requesting her to bake one of her fabulous baked goods to bring to family events. In earlier years, she volunteered in many different capacities at her church, St. Gregory in Warwick. In addition, she had a fond ear for music and also enjoyed singing, having a song for almost any occasion. Catherine also dabbled in writing poetry and truly enjoyed editing her creative work. Catherine's upbringing was such that her parents embraced all forms of learning and imparted this to their children. Her father especially was a logophile and this wonderful trait was passed on to Catherine's daughter and grandchildren - all of whom have a fond appreciation for words.
She is survived by her daughter, Marianne K. (Smith) Fung and her husband, Sun Sang, of West Warwick and her three grandchildren, whom she truly adored, Hannah, Leah and Olivia, as well as her sister, Janet Lovely of Shelton, CT. She was predeceased by her siblings: Joseph C. Lovely II, Eleanor Lovely, Dorothy Lovely and Robert Lovely. Catherine also had many nieces, nephews and godchildren and always delighted in learning about their latest achievements.
Her funeral service will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt. 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville, RI. Burial will follow in RI Veteran’s Cemetery, Exeter.
