The CCRI Knights took on the Wyverns of Quinsigamond Community College on Sunday in their second home doubleheader in as many days. The Knights won both games on the back of their offense, forcing a 10-run rule in both games. The Knights’ victories brought their record to 12-1 overall, and extended their winning streak to 12 games.
Game 1: Knights – 13 Wyverns - 3
In the first game, the Knights started Elijah Dressel
(Warwick, Rhode Island). Dressel started the game well, only allowing one run over his first two innings. In the third inning, he was injured and had to leave the game. He pitched two and 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Dave Simmons
(Warwick, Rhode Island) entered the game in relief. Simmons
allowed two runs over the next three and 1/3 innings. Simmons
picked up his second win of the season.
The Knights only needed the pitchers to go six innings due to their hot bats. The Knights started off the game cold, unable to find a groove. After four innings, the Knights and Wyverns were knotted at 3-3. The Knights turned it on in the fifth inning. Following a triple by Dylan Brooks
(Lookeba, Oklahoma) to start the innings, Deiviz Lara
(Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) singled to plate Brooks. The Knights took the lead and never looked back. Following the single, the Knights were able to pile it on in the fifth, scoring eight runs. After a scoreless top half of the sixth inning for Quinsigamond, the Knights came up to bat needing two runs to win the game. The Knights got those two runs on a Sam Franco
(Cranston, Rhode Island) double. Franco
ripped the ball down the line, driving in Garnell Bell
(Bridgeport, Connecticut) and Matt Boelter
(North Kingstown, Rhode Island). The Knights won the game, 13-3.
Game 2: Knights - 11 Wyverns - 1
The Knights had another great game in the second game of the doubleheader. The Knights were looking to extend their winning streak to 12, and did just that. Starting the game on the mound for the Knights was Matt Kennedy
(Johnston, Rhode Island). Kennedy
earned the win on the day, his first of the year. Kennedy
went three strong innings, allowing two hits. He surrendered four walks while striking out seven batters. Kennedy
allowed one run in this strong outing. After his three innings, Kennedy
gave way to Max Marcotte
(Coventry, Rhode Island). Marcotte
did not allow a baserunner over three innings of relief pitching. He struck out two batters over the three innings.
The Knights’ bats had a strong game again. In the first two innings, the Knights scored five runs to jump out to a commanding lead. Matched with the strong pitching, the Knights were in complete control. After giving up one run, the Knights started to score again in the fifth inning. Evan Broccoli
(Warwick, Rhode Island) led off the inning with a walk. After Brian Cipolla
(Cranston, Rhode Island) reached on an error, Jasiah
Hatch
(East Providence, Rhode Island) plated both players with a double. The Knights continued to pressure the Wyverns’ pitching, and continued to score. After scoring three more runs, Broccoli
came up with an opportunity to win the game for the Knights. Broccoli
hit a blooper to right field, giving the Knights the 11-1 lead, and the victory. Hatch
led all of the Knights’ batters with four hits in the second game. He had three singles, one double, two runs scored and three RBIs. Dylan Brooks
had another strong game, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.
The Knights have been a complete team to start the season. Head Coach Ken Hopkins
has noticed this and is impressed with how the team has combined pitching and hitting. The Knights will look to extend their winning streak when they take on Holyoke on Wednesday afternoon. The game is at 3:30 p.m. at Whitey Fell Field at the Knight campus in Warwick.
