Bishop Hendricken ace pitcher and Vanderbilt commit Alex Clemmey put on a show on Monday evening as he led the Hawks to an 8-0 win on the road against Lincoln.
With multiple Major League scouts in attendance, including representatives from the Red Sox, Yankees, Reds and Mets, the senior standout bounced back after a rough opening day to pitch four innings. He finished with nine strikeouts and allowed no hits, posting fastballs of 95 mph with some reaching as fast as 98.
Clemmey got off to a rough start last week as Coventry pulled off the upset win. Clemmey allowed just one hit and struck out seven, but struggled with control as the Oakers made the most of walked batters.
Control was not an issue on Monday, as Clemmey dominated throughout and showed why he is likely to be selected in the upcoming MLB Draft.
“It was good to bounce back after a tough loss against Coventry. I worked on a few things this week and wanted to bounce back strong and get a team win. I had faith in the guys behind me and that we were going to get the bats going and we did,” said Clemmey.
“He’s been outstanding and he has shown a lot of poise out on the mound. There’s a lot of pressure, a lot of scouts, he’s been awesome. He’s locked in,” added Hendricken coach Ed Holloway.
Hendricken reliever Matt Jarmie would pitch the final three innings and shut out the Lions. Griffin Crain would knock in a run in the second inning to give the Hawks the 2-0 lead. Cooper Maher and would also knock in a run, while Ryan Thompson knocked in four more to run away with the win.
“Bases loaded, two outs, I really was just focused on expanding the lead at that point,” said Thompson, who knocked in three runs in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. “We just tried to stay behind Alex and score as many runs as possible. You never know what could happen, so we didn’t want to take our foot off the gas.”
Holloway was happy with his team’s offensive response late in the contest, as five of its runs were scored in the final two innings.
“Early in the game, we had some chances and left guys on base. We hung tough and I was really happy with Matt who came in and got the job done after Alex,” said Holloway.
Hendricken improved to 2-1 with the win and will look to build some more momentum moving forward. The buzz is sure to surround Clemmey this season, but he is not worried about the eyes watching him from the stands.
“I’m really just focused on what’s going on with me and the catcher. I got a taste of it this summer with the scouts, but they’re just people there to watch a baseball game,” Clemmey said. “I am just trying to go out there, have fun and win a baseball game.”
For his performance on Monday, Clemmey is also the Warwick Beacon’s Athlete of the Week.
