The public is invited to attend the first event for the newly formed Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence (RICAGV) on Monday, Nov. 18, hosted by the University of Rhode Island.
The event, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Swan Hall Auditorium on the campus of URI (60 Upper College Road, Kingston), will include a viewing of the documentary “Living for 32” and a speaking program featuring a number of local figures.
According to a press release from the organization, the mission of the RICAGV is to create a safer community by preventing gun violence and enhancing gun safety. The organization will advocate for effective local, state and national programs, policies and legislation.
The documentary “Living for 32” was an official selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and is focused on the 32 students and faculty killed in the tragic shooting at Virginia Tech, as well as the 32 people killed by guns every day in America.
During the speaking portion of the program, the following community members will be giving their comments; all of them are advocates for solutions to gun violence and increased gun safety: Teny Oded Gross, Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence; Linda Finn, Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence; Paul Bueno de Mesquita, URI Center for Nonviolence & Peace Studies; and Arlene Hicks, Exeter Town Council President.
The event is open to the public, with a suggested donation of $10; admission is free for students. Sponsors include the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence, URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, and Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence.
