Cruising to help the animals

Judy Salvadore, president of the Friends of the Warwick Animal Shelter, knew it was going to be a huge turnout when she spotted vintage, custom and classic cars on Route 95 early Sunday morning. She was on her way to the car show benefiting the Warwick Animal Shelter held not far from the shelter on Service Avenue. Three hundred cars showed up for the event that was started 15 years ago. Salvadore was thrilled by the turnout, which she estimated netted $15,000 between sponsorships, registrations and the sale of raffle tickets and apparel for the shelter. She said it couldn’t have been done without show co-directors Ruth Napolitano, Dawn Burnham and an estimated 50 volunteers. The next fundraising event for “the animals” is the Shekarchi Scramble to be held Aug. 12. The golfing event hosted by House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi will be held for a first time at Top Golf in Cranston. In providing details of the car show, Salvadore put in a pitch for the adoption of a pair of big dogs at the pound. “This is why we’re doing this [to help the pound and the adoption of animals],” she said.
