Department of Teleportation continue their abstract evolution with new EP

In this year of 2023, we’re reaching the point where we’ve collectively experienced two eras of pre-pandemic and post-pandemic. Things were either a bit different or majorly different for a lot of people before COVID-19 shut everything down back in 2020 and now things haven’t been quite the same. Yes, there are variants of the virus still lingering around but our society has been the closest to “normal” it has been in a long time. We’ve also been experiencing a bit of a new beginning, this can especially be said for the music scene in Providence and around Rhode Island as a whole. A bunch of new bands have popped up since our local venues reopened and this includes the Providence noise rock act Department of Teleportation.

Back on February 3, the quartet of vocalist Marc Calhoun, guitarist Sven Morse, drummer Bobby Gregory and bassist Scott Miller released their sophomore EP titled “Lifestyles of the Spatially Unreasonable.” It’s a fantastic continuation of the band’s aggressive sound that brings a ton of angst & energy to the senses. Jared Mann from Providence alt-punks Twin Foxes did a heck of a job doing the recording & mixing at his Distorted Forest Studio that’s based in North Smithfield. The sound quality captures the electrifying emphasis and amplification that’s being conveyed with everything coming in clear. It’s one of those records that gets better with each increase of volume.

“Code: Mongoose” kicks off the EP with a fuzzy bass line from Miller before Calhoun’s vocals arrive along with Morse’s riffs and Gregory’s beats. The drums have a major presence in “College Material” by being the rhythmic canvas that the other sonic elements feed off of. There’s a squiggly sounding tone in “Dry Erase Blood” that I can’t quite identify, it sounds like it’s coming from either Morse’s guitar or an effects pedal but it does sound cool. “Fake Cougar” rides a bit of a groove in the way it’s arranged and it’s probably my favorite track off the record. With some radio samples and seismic drumming, “Spider God vs. Echo God” is another ripper while “The Money $hoe” finishes it all off with a flurry of distortion.

To give Department of Teleportation’s latest release a listen and perhaps even make a purchase, log on to their Bandcamp page at departmentofteleportation.bandcamp.com. If you’re looking to see these guys live, go see them at AS220 on 115 Empire Street in Providence on March 25. They’re going to be opening up for Washington, D.C. post-hardcore icons Soulside and J. Robbins from fellow D.C. post-hardcore act Jawbox so you should go if you like your music loud. In the meantime, go experience the “Lifestyles of the Spatially Unreasonable.” It’s short in length but it surely packs a musical punch.
