According to Warwick’s top traffic cop, the aggressive way that state and local police are going after drunk drivers has resulted in many more arrests. From the Thanksgiving holiday weekend through the New Year, the Warwick Police Department arrested 56 drivers and charged them with DUI related offenses to include refusal to submit to a chemical test. Additional patrols specifically targeting DUI related offenses were out during this critical time in an effort to combat this growing problem.
“Last year, we made a total of 494 arrests for DUI and related offenses,” said Lt. Michael Gilbert of the Traffic Division. “That’s the highest number in the state outside of the State Police themselves, who made a little more than 500 arrests in 2013.”
The effort is aimed at getting more drunks off the road, said Gilbert.
“It’s aimed at keeping people, keeping us, safe from people who continue to place the public in danger by getting behind the wheel after drinking,”
Gilbert said retired Col. Rick Sullivan of the Rhode Island State Municipal Police Academy is still in the process of collecting all the figures, as we found out when we called for the figures this week.
Gilbert said the Warwick Police Department will continue to do its part in a concerted effort to put an end to this problem that oftentimes ends with tragic consequences.
