Savannah Hersey had a senior year to remember – both on the playing fields and in the rinks.
Particularly for Vets’ field hockey, Hersey was outstanding in the fall, leading all players in the city with 10 goals and 29 points.
Hersey was a big reason why Vets encountered a great deal of success as a team, finishing the regular season 10-4-2 clip – the only team in Warwick to finish with a winning record.
“She was the focal point of our team,” Vets’ head coach Jim Areson said. “She’s one of the top two or three players that I’ve coached. She was the main reason why we won – she picked up her play and she was phenomenal.”
The ’Canes made it all the way to the Division II semifinals this season before falling to the eventual champion, Classical, 3-1.
Hersey’s leadership was instrumental to the team’s success this year, with Vets making the leap from four wins in 2013 to 10 this season.
“She epitomizes everything you want in a player,” Areson said. “She’s hard-working, a great leader and a phenomenal athlete.”
Now that Hersey is moving on, Areson will have a huge hole to fill, both from a talent and leadership standpoint.
“Maybe the best compliment I can give is that I tell my little girl to watch Savannah,” Areson said. “I’m going to miss her. She’s going to be hard to replace.”
