Garden Club plants tree at Edgewood Congregational Church

Posted

Members of the Edgewood Garden Club joined with members of the Edgewood Congregational Church for a tree planting ceremony on the church grounds last Tuesday.

“We plant a tree in the neighborhood every Arbor Day,” said Jackie Rizzi, Garden Club president, “but the April date was postponed because of the pandemic. It seemed appropriate to do it on the first day of autumn. We recently planted a tree at Trinity Episcopal Church as part of our civic beatification projects.”

Kathy Schnabel, chairperson of the club’s Horticulture and Environmental Committee, is also a member of the church and suggested a spot near the church gardens and Peace Pole. Her husband, Mark, dug the hole.

The dogwood tree was donated by the Rhode Island Tree Council.

Rizzi quoted environmentalist Lucy Larson, a teacher back in the early 1800s, changing the original pronoun and saying, “She who plants a tree plants hope.”

The Garden Club has been in existence for over 85 years and currently has a member ship of over 65 men and women.

Both the club and the church have members from both Cranston and Warwick.
