Both Democrat Gina Raimondo and Republican Allan Fung are clearly qualified to serve as Rhode Island’s chief executive, as is the Moderate Party candidate, Bob Healey.
While they differ on how to improve our state’s economy, both Raimondo and Fung bring good ideas to the fore. Fung has shown that he can run a city very effectively; keeping Cranston’s tax rates steady for three years running. The city has seen its fiscal situation stabilize, and new development arrive – including Chapel View and a revitalized Garden City – during the mayor’s tenure.
Raimondo has demonstrated that she has the courage to stand up to stiff opposition to pursue difficult, even seemingly unattainable, policy goals. The pension reform championed by the treasurer stands as her signature accomplishment, and while the matter remains in litigation after a proposed settlement fell short, it seems highly unlikely the process of addressing an issue of such immense importance to our state’s future would have made any kind of comparable progress without Raimondo’s leadership.
Each hopeful has a proven record of success. But two differences between the two major candidates make this paper’s endorsement decision easier.
Raimondo is a new political face whose background is atypical. She didn’t cut her political teeth through the machinations required of local office and legislative positions. Perhaps such a change is what our state needs.
Additionally, as a Democrat, she will fare better working to push her initiatives through our Democrat-dominated General Assembly.
For these reasons, we endorse Democrat Gina Raimondo for governor.

I find it funny that pension reform is a reason listed to vote FOR Gina Raimondo. Yet this cities inflated pension liability isn't a reason NOT to vote for the mayor. More proof John Howell is a hack and this newspaper is garbage. The projo is down to 70,000 subscribers due to their awful bias. The beacon will suffer the same fate. What a shame voters can't have an objective news source. I'd be embarrassed to work for this rag!!!
