Katelyn Vieira is on her way to the University of Massachusetts - Lowell on a full scholarship to play Division I soccer, but helped her squad at Pilgrim take care of some unfinished business first.
Vieira led the state in scoring with 47 goals and added 18 assists to lead the Pats to their first championship since 2000.
Her play on the field and leadership as a captain helped her also earn her third consecutive Girls’ Soccer Athlete of the Year award.
“That’s pretty amazing in itself, I’ve been coaching for a while and I don’t know if I’ve seen that many threepeats,” Pilgrim girls’ soccer head coach Tom Flanders said. “She has those intangible things, not only fast and quick but she has a desire and a knack to always be in the right place at the right time, she’s a student of the game; she’s made those notes in her head, she’s a complete student of the game, very coachable, almost like having a coach out there.”
Flanders was quick to note that Pilgrim probably doesn’t win the state title without the contributions of numerous other players, including All-City goalkeeper Hannah Page. However, Vieira’s ability to remain calm and collected was a major driving force for the team’s success.
“She’s the captain and she was instrumental in the way we showed up for all those playoff games,” Flanders said. “She’s not nervous, not playing scared. All the things she was doing she was preaching to her teammates.”
Flanders said it was very easy to sell the senior star to UMass Lowell, especially with her academic successes compounding her talents on the field.
Vieira may not stop with just college soccer, either. Flanders noted that Vieira’s parents are from Portugal and that the options of working out with the national team or playing in Europe are certainly open.
Essentially, her career in soccer can carry her as far as she wants it to take her. “Whatever she sets her mind to, she’s going to do,” Flanders said.
