The Bishop Hendricken baseball team jumped out to a fast start and never looked back as it cruised past Pilgrim 12-0 in five innings on Tuesday afternoon to remain unbeaten in league play.
Hendricken starting pitcher Griffin Crain set the tone by striking out the side in the top of the first inning. Hendricken’s offense would take over from there, scoring seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to take control early.
“We just tried to get ahead and get as much as we could in the first. We just wanted to get in the dugout quick and then go back out and hit. We have a great offense so I trusted those guys to take it from there,” said Crain, who helped his own cause at the plate by going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.
Crain earned the win on the mound and allowed just two hits while striking out 10 batters overall.
“It’s easier to pitch with a lead. My stuff felt pretty good today, my changeup was working, so I relied on it a lot today. I was able to mix up the speed, mess with their timing,” Crain said.
Cole Camara finished the day with a pair of hits for Hendricken and also drove in a run.
“We were just taking our time, making sure we picked the right pitch and do damage with it,” said Camara, who is also hoping the turn in weather will allow the Hawks to build some momentum. “It’s great to finally get out here with some nice weather. We’ve had a bunch of games canceled so it’s a great start. We’re starting to get into the swing of things now.”
Cooper Maher extended his hit streak to four games for Hendricken and drove in two runs as well.
Aidan Dumond and Derek Asciolla recorded Pilgrim’s hits in the loss. The Pats earned their first win of the season last week in a 5-4 decision over rival Toll Gate.
After coming up short in the Division I playoffs the past two years, the Hawks are looking to finally get over the hump and bring home a title with a core that includes 11 seniors.
“We’re really motivated, we have one goal,” said Crain, who will be headed to DI Louisville next season. “Win every game. We want to win every game with one goal in June.”
