Sept. 9, Vasa Family Fun Day is being held on Sat., Sept. 9, from noon - 5 p.m. at Little Rhody Vasa Park, 10 Boswell Trail, in Foster.  This event, being sponsored by R.I. District #3, Vasa Order of America, promises to be a great time for the whole family.  The park opens at noon with a flag ceremony at 1 p.m.  An authentic Swedish meatball lunch will be served, continuously, from 1 – 4 p.m.  (The lunch includes Swedish meatballs, gravy, mashed potatoes, asparagus, Lingonberry sauce, bread, and butter).  A full bar is located on the premises.  Music will be provided by DJ Big Bill.  Other food vendors and craft vendors will be available.  There will be raffle prizes and you don’t even have to be present to win!  There will also be bocce, corn hole, volleyball, basketball, cookie decorating, the balloon twister, horseshoes, and Tombola.  For the kids throughout the day, there will be a piñata, train rides, face painting, egg toss, pie eating contest, playground, sandcastle contest, and the ever-popular SAWDUST PILE!

Sept. 9, Smith’s Castle Art Exhibit on Sat., Sept. 9, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Smith’s Castle, 55 Richard Smith Drive, North Kingstown, will feature an art exhibit open to the public. The exhibit will feature three Rhode Island artists: Providence artist, Susan Hardy; Newport quilter, Veronica Perkins-May; and North Kingstown watercolorist, Mark Burnham. The artists’ original works will compliment and explore the themes of our upcoming seminar: “Anchored in Rhode Island: The Slave Trade and Reckoning with Our Past” to be held on October 14.  Wine, cheese, and light refreshments will be served. Sept. 9, The Hope Historical Society Annual Meeting will be held on Sat., Sep. 9, at 2 p.m., at the Howland Barn, 35 Ryefield Road, Hope. Sept. 9, Ocean State Orchid Society Auction will be held on Sat., Sept. 9, from 12:30 p.m. (preview), start time: 1 p.m., at Rocky Hill Grange, 1340 South County Train, East Greenwich.  Entrance in rear. A variety of Phalaenopsis, Brassavola, and other orchid genera will be available for auction. Sept. 9, Rose Society Meeting will be held on Sat., Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Church, 604 Seven Mile Road, Hope (western Cranston line).  Have you ever wondered how to receive a Blue Ribbon in a Rose Show? Sept 10, The Kerri McClean “Vision of Hope” Cancer Walk will be held on Sun., Sept. 10, at Warwick City Park, Asylum Road, Buttonwoods/Warwick, with registration at 9:30 a.m.  Registration fee:  $30pp. The 14th annual walk is to benefit women with gynecological cancer and their families.  Proceeds go to the “Women in Need Fund” and the “Integrative Care Service Fund,” programs at Women & Infants Hospital in memory of Kerri McClean who succumbed to a five-year battle with cervical cancer in 2009.  Baskets and gift cards will be raffled.  Refreshments will be provided. Sept 11, West Bay Chorale Begins 2023 Fall Season on Mon., Sept. 11, at 7 p.m., with registration starting at 6:30 p.m., at St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Sept. 12, Photographic Society of RI will hold its second meeting of their 96^th year on Tues., Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m., as a social time and the meeting will start at 7 p.m. It will be held at Lakewood Baptist Church, 255 Atlantic Ave., Warwick. The guest speaker will be Rick Cloran.  The program will be "Editing Images for Presentation." It will include processing through Photoshop, the camera raw filter in Photoshop which will provide a parallel to the Develop module in Lightroom and several third party plug-ins and filters that work within Photoshop. Future meetings will include live demos, competitions, set-ups for photo ops, image studies and presentations from experts on a vast array of topics for a wide range of skill levels.  Whether a member or not, please come and enjoy the program and to see what the club is all about.

Sept. 13, NAMI-RI: Fall "Family-to Family" Course and Support Groups The Rhode Island Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI) is now accepting registration for their Fall session of which begins Wed., Sept.13, at 6:30 p.m. This is a free, virtual, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidence-based program, which means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. NAMI-Rhode Island's Family-to-Family course is taught by trained family members who have lived experience with a loved one, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises. Sept. 16,  The Annual Conimicut Village-Wide Yard Sale  will be held on Sat., Sept. 16 (Rain Date Sept. 17) from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.  Set up is at seller’s home and seller keeps all their profits. September 16, The Concert in the Valley, the annual fundraiser concert for Moosup Valley Church, 81 Moosup Valley Rd., Foster, will be held from 12 to 5 p.m., on the lawn and outdoor stage at the church. The "suggested" donation of $20 includes our famous BLTs, hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks, cookies & brownies and additional homemade baked goods for sale. There will be a silent auction inside with unique items and theme baskets. Local vendors with  handmade jewelry, used books, plants, lovely watercolor prints, and more. Bring a chair, a blanket, and spend an afternoon of family-fun listening to local music and supporting the little church in the beautiful Valley. Sept. 17, Community Dance:  Souper Sunday, will be held on Sun., Sept. 17, Warwick Center for the Arts Gallery, 3259 Post Road, Warwick, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. (intro session 6:15 pm). Sept.  16, Jimmy Buffet Night Fundraiser will be held on Sat., Sept. 16, at 6 p.m., at the Tri City Elks Lodge #14, 1915 W. Shore Rd, Warwick. Sept. 23, Annual Harvest Festival at Smith’s Castle invites the public to join a celebration of the annual Harvest Festival on Sat., Sept. 23, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., at Smith’s Castle, 55 Richard Smith Drive, North Kingstown. This family friendly event the Sheffield Farm Petting Zoo and Pony Rides. Entertainment will be provided by the Farm Dog Band. Sept. 23, Lakewood Baptist Church Group Yard Sale, Bake Sale and Snack Bar will be held on Sat., Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., 255 Atlantic Ave, Warwick. Oct. 1, Our Lady of Grace Church Fall Harvest Craft Fair will be held on Sun., Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Our Lady of Grace Church, at 15 George Waterman Road, in Johnston (entrance on Sheridan Street), will hold its annual Fall Harvest Craft Fair. Oct. 7, Spartan DEKA MILE: Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW) Fundraiser will be held on Sat., Oct. 7, at It Starts Here Fitness (ISHFitness), 380 Jefferson Blvd.,  Suite G, Warwick, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  Looking for police, fire, military, troopers, and civilians to compete in a friendly competition for a great cause.  Race individually or with a partner, and each racer will receive a DEKA T-shirt and medal.  50% of all ticket profits to benefit Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW). Oct. 14, Annual  No More Hunger Walk A walk to call attention to food insecurity and raise funds for local food pantries  will be held on Sat., Oct. 14. An organization that provides free manufacturing training, hosts a series of job fairs every Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon.  We Make RI offer job seekers a chance to meet with employers, get career counseling, resume help and more. Every Friday Cribbage Players Do you play cribbage? Starting Saturday, Sept. 25, Citizenship Prep Classes at WPL Prepare for the U.S. Naturalization Interview with Citizen Preparation classes at the Warwick Public Library, starting Sat., Sept. 25, 10 a.m. to noon. NAMI-RI Offers Family Support Groups The RI chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI-RI) offers free support groups for families and friends of loved ones who are struggling with their mental health. The groups are led by trained facilitators who also have lived experience as family members themselves. The group meetings last about 1.5 hours, and everyone who participates in the meeting gets a chance to share.  The other members of the group try to offer help and resources, when appropriate, based on their own experiences. Amenity Aid – Volunteers Needed We are looking for volunteers that would like to help us plan and staff community events, organize hygiene product collection drives and raise funds for Amenity Aid.  Amenity Aid’s mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of vulnerable populations by creating access to essential hygiene products. Serving all of Rhode Island, we distribute toiletry necessities to those most vulnerable through our network of direct service agencies.
