To the Editor:
No summer ever felt complete without at least one visit to Rocky Point Amusement Park right here in Warwick.
Because the park has long been shut down, future generations have been cheated out of fun experiences I will treasure forever.
Anyone can go to Six Flags in Massachusetts or New Jersey, but they will never know the warm and convenient atmosphere that was Rocky Point. The same can be said if the PawSox move out of Pawtucket into a new state-of-the-art stadium. Even if it is just down the road in Providence, baseball in Rhode Island will never be the same.
I grew up watching the likes of Roger Clemens and Wade Boggs pass through Pawtucket on their way up to Boston. McCoy housed Righetti vs. Fidrych and the longest game. The parking lot is always free and the tickets remain reasonably priced. Under the stewardship of late owner Ben Mondor, the PawSox evolved into a first class minor league baseball franchise.
Why fix what isn’t broken? The Boston Red Sox did a fine job refurbishing Fenway Park from within. Why not preserve McCoy Stadium in the same way and keep our team in Pawtucket?
With Rocky Point Amusement Park already a distant memory, Rhode Islanders can’t afford to lose another popular summertime destination to Providence or anywhere else.

If the State is hell bent on spending money on this, why not just spend it in Pawtucket? Why start from ground zero? The only people who will benefit from a new stadium are out of state owners who also are part owners of a team that has the oldest ballpark in the Majors. Why not build a really razoo park for the Red Sox here in RI and call the team the New England Red Sox? I bet they could make a boatload of money from that and the bottom line is the only thing they care about.
