Hendricken senior Nick Martino was the lone Rhode Islander to capture individual gold at the New England High School Wrestling Championships at the Providence Career and Technical Academy on Saturday, out-muscling the field en route to the 285-pound crown.
Martino defeated two of Connecticut’s best heavyweight wrestlers to earn the title.
He pinned Michael Burchell from Daniel Hand High School in Madison, Connecticut, in the semifinals to earn a spot in the finals against Jasper Stone from Simsbury High School in Simsbury, Connecticut.
Martino would edge out Stone, 1-0, in dramatic fashion to secure his spot atop the podium.
Due to Martino’s strong finish and a fourth-place effort from Devin Rivet in the 138-pound bracket, Hendricken was the top Rhode Island team at New Englands, earning fifth with a total of 56 points.
