To the Editor:
A brief response to Sam Parente’s overly long “More than just numbers” comments of August 23.
Evidently, the author of this missive has totally missed the point of athletes who elect to “take a knee” as a way of protesting the treatment of those less fortunate than themselves. The author either forgets or is unaware of the members of the military who support these athletes.
The only Americans who “are greatly offended by this manner of expression” are those who totally miss the point.
The terms “most divisive and inappropriate” apply not to these brave young protesters but rather to the treatment fostered by the present “inappropriate and divisive” faux leadership misleading our country down a dangerous path.

A lot of the people who are really offended are the yahoos who drive around in their pickup trucks with a tattered American flag(s) flapping in the exhaust spewing from their trucks. They should check out 4 USC § 8 (e)
These people are the ones disrespecting the flag and all those who fought under it.

I totally agree with Lynn and Justanidiot. It pains me to see so much hate directed towards people who are well within their rights to peacefully protest. I believe that the only way people like that ever change their opinion is if it happens to them or someone they love.
