Years ago we used to enjoy breakfast at this cozy little spot at 465 Warwick Ave., right near the Warwick/Cranston line. Rose retired and Paula took over, running the restaurant for years.
Now we have new tenants and bacon and eggs have been replaced with tortillas, tacos and burritos.
Named after a small town in Mexico, Neza serves dishes like they serve in the small town in Mexico.
The diner atmosphere has been replaced with cloth napkins, a Mexican décor and music, and authentic Mexican cooking.
Prices are moderate, with lunches averaging around $13. and dinners $18. Lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Joyce enjoyed Camarones a la Diablo, Spicy Shrimp with mushrooms and an avocado and red onion sauce. Like most meals, it comes with rice and beans.
The waitress warned Joyce that diablo meant hot, and she meant it. I tasted it and agreed. Joyce loved it.
I ordered the Cochinita Pibil. The slow cooked pork was tender and plentiful, leaving enough for lunch the next day.
I wrapped the pork, beans, rice, and red onions in a tortilla and enjoyed the taste.
Neza has all the foods you would expect in a Mexican restaurant: tacos, tortillas, fajitas, burritos, etc.
The difference is in the preparation with appealing presentations, garnishes and sauces. Ask for the spicy Mexican pepper or poplano.
They also have some appealing appetizers, including guacamole ($10) and shrimp ceviche ($13).
Complementary chips and salsa are at your table while you wait for your meal, and there is a bar with some interesting drinks.
Neza is open seven days a week at 11:00 a.m. to10:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday for dine in and take out.
Their number is 383-3729.
