A kidney stone could not keep me from seeing Ocean State Theatre’s haunting production of perhaps the best musical ever.
Using simple sets enhanced by Rob Siler’s on-point lighting provided the background for some excellent singers, both local and “out of town.”
Concentrating on the operatic style of music, I was able to appreciate the lyrics to such classics as “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Who am I,” “On My Own” and “Bring Him Home.”
Comic relief was brought by J.P. Sarro and Nicole Paloma Sarron, as the wickedly funny Thenardiers.
Rhode Islander Frederic S. Scheff made for a strong Jean Valjean, a man who spends his life seeking redemption.
Kevin B. McGlynn compliments him as the persistent police inspector.
“Les Miserables” is at OSTC through Oct. 27. If you have never seen it, where have you been? If you have, it is worth seeing again, if for nothing else, to enjoy the music.
