The Warwick PAL Post 61 Junior American Legion team gave top-seeded East Bay-Riverside Post 10 a run for its money in the state semifinals over the weekend, but ultimately came up a little bit short of springing the upset.
PAL lost game one of the series 8-4 on Thursday, then battled on Friday before falling 9-8. East Bay advanced to the state finals, where it will take on either R&R Construction or Auburn Post 20-Elmwood Sports Center.
The fourth-seeded team from the South division in the postseason, PAL started its run with a victory over Pezzuco Construction in a best-of-three preliminary round series. It won game one 9-5, lost game two 4-0 and then captured game three 6-4.
That advanced PAL to the quarterfinals, where it was re-seeded sixth. Playing No. 3 seed Upper Deck/Spinners-Post 86/14, PAL won the first game 6-2 and had to forfeit game two, but it came back to win the decisive game three 9-5 on Wednesday.
That put PAL into the semifinals, where its run came to a close.
