The Pilgrim girls soccer team entered the week in first place in its division and is once again primed to go on a deep run in the upcoming playoffs.

Pilgrim sat at 7-4-1 in league play as of Wednesday morning, most recently beating East Greenwich in a 3-0 shutout at home on Monday. Amaya Coffie led the way with a goal and an assist while Chloe Casavant and Kiley Strain also added goals. Keeper Jenna Madden picked up her third shutout in four games while making three saves in net.

The team won its previous game against Cranston West in a 1-0 decision as Coffie scored the team’s lone goal.

“We’ve been happy with how things have been panning out the last week or two. We’d like to take care of business (against La Salle) and we want to finish strong,” said Pilgrim coach Ross Carroll, who has been pleased with his team’s stifling defense as of late. “Our defense has been very solid and Jenna has been incredible for us, too. We had a tough spell when we faced some of the teams from the other division and lost a few, so it toughened us up a bit and showed us how good we have to be to beat quality teams and get points.”

Coffie has lived up to expectations this fall as arguably the state’s top offensive player as she accounts for 23 of the club’s 35 goals this season. Pilgrim has relied on several other players, including some underclassmen, to step up and give her help putting the ball in the net.

“On a game-to-game basis, everyone gives us a little bit. Lorelai Leddy has done a good job for us, Chloe Casavant has helped out Amaya. We’ve also gotten contributions from freshmen Allison Patten and Emma Rattigan. It takes a village. We’ve had girls fill in behind Amaya each game and will need that heading into the playoffs,” said Carroll.

Pilgrim took on La Salle on Wednesday afternoon but the results were not available at press time. The Pats will face Cranston West and then finish the regular season with another meeting against Smithfield.

These last few games will be critical in determining playoff seeding, as the top three clubs are within two games of one another. As always, Division I has been a power struggle at the top, which Carroll believes has helped the girls prepare for what’s to come in the upcoming postseason.

“This year there are many teams that can beat each other. Once the playoffs start it’s a new season and you need to step up and be playing your best soccer. Health will have a lot to do with it. If we can stay healthy and play our game then we will do well,” said Carroll.
