The Pilgrim competitive cheerleading team took home its first championship since 2019 last weekend, when it won Division II with a score of 84.5, edging North Providence who scored an 82.1.
Pilgrim placed second the past two seasons at states, but was determined to take that next step this time around.
“We knew from tryouts that this year was going to be different. It was their work ethic, they practiced four days a week. It was a really positive season,” said coach Taylor Levin. “They were super excited. We’ve come in second at states the last two years to the same team, so everyone was happy to hear their names called in first at placements.”
The team was led by four senior captains – Paige Leland, Mackenzie Lincoln, Ayla Lapointe and Olivia DosReis-Carroll – who helped raise the bar from last year.
“They really set the standard and tone for this season, they knew what they wanted to get done. They were sick of getting the same outcome. They put on their captain hats and led the team. What’s great about this team is how close of a team it is, and it starts with them. It’s like a family,” said assistant coach Halsey Gargano.
Getting the crowd involved in its performance was key for the team’s final score, according to Gargano.
“We really focused on performing. Getting the crowd engaged and being energetic. That’s what set us apart from the other teams in our division. The crowd was engaged in our routine because it was fun and energetic,” said Gargano.
Pilgrim will be returning a roster made up primarily of underclassmen next season. Levin hopes that this year’s championship experience will pay dividends next year as the Pats try to make another run at a title.
“I’m appreciative of the fact that we have a lot of underclassmen on the team that were able to witness this win right off the bat. That’s our standard now, they now will know how they’ll have to practice and perform,” Levin said.
