Warwick resident Alex Leddy has earned all-league football honors at Salve Regina University. The Pilgrim graduate is a sophomore tight end for the Seahawks, and he was one of a program-high 12 players to earn accolades from the New England Football Conference.
Leddy made nine straight starts this season in his first year as a major contributor. While he caught only one pass for 20 yards, he was a valuable weapon as a blocker, and the conference took notice.
“Leddy is not only a tight end, but plays as an offensive lineman as well,” head coach Kevin Gilmartin said in a release. “His position is not just about catching balls and racking up stats but creating the edge for the team and laying down blocks. Leddy’s extra effort on each play to create the edge and his blocking down field is a big reason for his all-conference honor this season.”
The Seahawks went 7-3 in the regular season and lost 48-35 to Western Connecticut State in the ECAC Bowl Championship.
Hawk hoopsters
excelling early on
The 2013-14 campaign for Roger Williams has gotten off to a rocky start, with the Hawks entering the holiday break at 1-7, but one plus point thus far has been the play of junior guard Ryan Palumbo, a Hendricken grad.
Averaging a team-high 35 minutes per game, Palumbo also leads the RWU five with 37 assists while chipping in with nearly 15 points per game.
The high-water mark for Palumbo came in a game against local rival Salve Regina on Dec. 7, which saw the Hawks crash to an 83-79 defeat despite his game-high 24 points. In addition, the once-and-present Hawk chipped in with five assists and four steals in the losing cause.
Meanwhile, much has been expected of former Hendricken star Billy Baron this winter, and the Canisius senior is doing his part to meet the targets that have been set for himself and the Golden Griffins.
Named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s preseason player of the year, the sharp-shooting guard currently leads Canisius in free throw percentage (91.9 percent), assists (49) and points per game (20.4).
Baron has also acquired a flair for the dramatic – he nailed a buzzer-beater from behind the arc to give the Golden Griffins an 86-85 triumph over Elon on Nov. 19, capping off a back-and-forth contest that saw the lead change hands seven times and ten ties.
Mattiello scoring for
Greyhounds
Hendricken alum Nick Mattiello recently reached a milestone on the ice by notching his 25th career collegiate goal in Assumption’s 3-2 loss to Southern New Hampshire on Nov. 23.
The former Hawk opened the game’s scoring by slotting home a Ryan Gomez feed early in the second period and later added a second to tie the contest up at two apiece in the third before the Penmen wrote an unhappy ending to the Greyhounds’ script.
