Online threats against Warwick Veterans Middle School and Winman Middle School on Monday afternoon caused the cancellation of after-school activities.
Due to the threats, students in both schools were placed in a “restrictive movement” protocol, meaning they had to remain in their classrooms.
“After the Warwick Police Department conducted a thorough investigation, it was deemed that the threats made to Winman Middle School and Warwick Veterans Middle School were not credible,” the Warwick School Department said in a statement on Monday night. “We would like to thank the WPD; as well as the School Administrations, faculties and staff for their help with this matter.”
In response to a question about the incident, Col. Bradford Connor wrote: “The alleged threat at the middle school did involve the mention of a firearm, however the allegations were unfounded and anyone was involved was deemed not to have access to firearms.”
In a letter sent out to parents earlier in the afternoon, the School Department said that a greater police presence helped conduct the students’ dismissal at the end of the school day. Who made the threat is at this point unknown.
Classes at both schools continued as usual on Tuesday.
