The community will have the opportunity to celebrate Warwick’s quahogging heritage with an outdoor concert by Rhode Island’s Debra Mann Quartet at the Second Annual Quahoggers’ Jamboree at Warwick Public Library Thursday, June 13.
The quahog, or hard-shelled clam, has been important to Warwick from its very beginning. Fishermen have made a living harvesting quahogs from Narragansett Bay. Families have gone clam digging for dinner, and Warwick has gathered at clambakes and shore dinners to enjoy the seafood treat that Governor Lincoln Chafee called “a symbol of Rhode Island.”
Festivities begin at 6 p.m. Local quahoggers have been invited to talk about their work, and display the tools of their trade. Visit the Poppy’s Gourmet concession tent to buy kettle corn, lemonade, and ice cream for the show. Children can sit for a sea creature face painting.
At 7 p.m., the Debra Mann Quartet takes the stage with an hour of contemporary jazz. Enjoy the music of Joni Mitchell and Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim played with the Quartet’s stylish jazz touch. The concert will be held in the Warwick Library garden. Those planning to attend are urged to bring blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the show. In the event of rain, the Jamboree will be held inside the library.
The Second Annual Quahoggers’ Jamboree is sponsored by the city of Warwick, Department of Tourism, Culture and Development and the Friends of the Library.Register online at warwicklibrary.org or call 739-5440, x4.
