Reflecting on an unprecedented month

While our focus here has always been, and always will be, on the local events, people, and incidents that shape our daily lives, sometimes nationwide or worldwide events occur that require some level of reflection and acknowledgment, as they transcend into something greater and affect the lives of each and every American, regardless of your individual politics or beliefs.

Over the course of less than a month — just 25 days — we as a nation have seen unprecedented moments unfold, one after another, that have altered the course of our present, our near future, and certainly the path ahead.

On June 27, a simple political debate between presidential candidates — something that a growing body of anecdotal and research-backed data has suggested don’t really move the political needle so much anymore, as people are more entrenched and polarized than any point in recent memory — resulted in a reaction so extreme and unified that it led to widespread calls for the incumbent president to halt his bid for re-election.

This wasn’t a politically-motivated attack coming from across the aisle coming from a place of bad faith, but a legitimate groan of concern voiced by a significant enough portion of the president’s own political party; significant enough to warrant responses from the White House and two weeks of nonstop news cycles focusing on the president’s ability to actually perform the duties of the office.

On July 13, a bullet from a rifle fired by a 20-year-old member of the former president’s own political party rings out from what should have been an easily securable rooftop overlooking the speaking podium, missing a fatal connection by mere centimeters due to the precise turning of the candidate’s head at the exact right moment. The first assassination attempt on a presidential candidate since 1981 also brought with it the truly bizarre realization that there has been no immediate motive associated with the act, at least at this early stage, and an investigation into how such a security failure could have happened has already been launched.

Then, completing the triple-play of historical events all occurring within the same 25-day range, the sitting president sends a short notice through social media that after what must have been an immense and painful soul-searching expedition, he will not seek re-election, and fully endorsed the current Vice President.

Since then, the Democratic Party has raised more money in a one-day span than any other day in American history, there are lingering procedural questions that have never needed to be asked, let alone answered, and there is still around 100 days left until Election Day.

Given the amount of momentous events that have occurred in a fraction of that time, we truly cannot fathom what may be coming next.
