On July 5, the Cranston Police Department held its annual blood drive dedicated to Miranda Petrella at its Garfield Avenue headquarters. A little over three years ago, Miranda – the daughter of Detective Mark Petrella – was diagnosed with leukemia and spent six months at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, where she received intensive chemotherapy treatments. Throughout her treatment, Miranda received nearly 50 units of red blood cells and multiple platelet transfusions. Miranda has been in remission since October 2012 and living a happy and healthy life. In total, 25 pints of blood were donated. Those who were unable to attend may visit ribc.org to make an appointment using sponsor code 3179. (Text by Meri R. Kennedy/Photos by Steve Popiel)
