With parties not fitting distancing requirements in the midst of a pandemic, drive-by birthday parades are in vogue. That was the case on Mother’s Day for the 10th birthday celebration for Viviana Rose Fernandez, who arrived May 10, 2010, at Kent Hospital under the care of Dr. Douglas Nisbet. But there’s more to the story. Viviana’s mom, Kristen, was eight months pregnant when she and her mother Kathy Blackburn drove to New York City for Oprah’s “Live Your Best Life Weekend.” The weekend included a lineup of celebrities at the Jacob Javits Center followed on May 8 at the Radio City Music Hall where Oprah presented her life story. It was there that Kristen’s water broke. Kristen wanted to return to Rhode Island, so leaving Manhattan at midnight, Kathy drove her back. It was Mother’s Day morning, but it wasn’t until that night that Kristen’s labor pains intensified with Viviana arriving the next day. The story was featured in the Beacon and on Channel 10. Kristen sent the story to Oprah who then invited mother and daughter to join her Ultimate Viewers for a show in Australia. Viviana’s parade, led by her father, Chris, was made up of school, church, dance friends and family gathered at the Crowne Plaza then made its way to the house to throw kisses, candy, air hugs and shout happy birthday. As her mother says, Viviana continues to be the best Mother's Day present ever.

birthday, Viviana
