The Warwick School Department released its proposed budget Thursday night, which calls for an increase of $5.8 million from the city, which is a 4.53 percent increase over this year’s allocation. The current allocation from the city is $129.9 million. The proposal for the 2022-23 budget is $135.8 million.
“In order to design a budget, we must make assumptions about expected revenue from various sources along with identifying expenses and their expected cost,” a memo from Finance Director Tim McGrath read. “The district faces challenges in both areas where sources of revenue like State aid are on the decline putting more of the burden on local sources. This is compounded by rising prices for goods and services due to systemic inflation.”
According to the public documents the “subtotal revenue from state sources” in FY 2023 is $40,417,789.63, which is an increase of $192,857.93 compared to this year’s.
“The original budget manager's request of $196,941,852.55 was reduced down to $179,585,781.80 by - $(5,420,101.00) being grant funded and - $(11,935,969.75) being cut,
after careful review during meetings with all the budget managers,” McGrath’s memo read. “In submitting this budget, we tried to do so mindfully of the financial impact on the taxpayers of this community and minimize any cost increases while trying to budget appropriately for all the potential anticipated needs for the 2022/2023 Fiscal School Year.”
According to the budget documents, a total of $100.3 million is allocated towards salaries which accounts for 55.8 percent of the total budget.
Benefits in the proposed budget is $43.3 million which accounts for 24 percent of the proposed budget.
The School Committee’s first budget hearing is set for Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. at Veterans Middle School.
