WARWICK SHOWCASE

THE MARSH KING’S DAUGHTER
* * *

Taken from the novel by Karen Dionne, “The Marsh King’s Daughter starts out with great promise, telling the tale of a young girl dominated by her father, who teaches her survival skills in the remote marshes of northern Michigan.

Helena idolizes her father (Ben Mendelsohn) who is a bit creepy and sadistic. He treats his wife, who attempts to escape, badly.

A violent event occurs, and the father is arrested and imprisoned.

The screen goes black and when we next see Helena, (Daisy Ridley) she is a 20-year-old office worker, happily married with a young daughter. Hubby knows nothing of her past, despite the crude tattoos all over her body.

The father escapes from prison and the police show up at Helena’s, who must finally tell her husband about her past.

The movie then becomes a stalker chase movie. Elena returns to the swamp (Why we will never know) and father and daughter end up violently stalking each other until the bitter end.

The swamp scenes are great, but the movie becomes a violent mess.

One by one, the guy who was just awarded Citizen of the Year for keeping the roads clear becomes a vicious killer, knocking off guys named Speedo, Limbo and the like and throwing their bodies in deep gullies.

Nels ends up in the middle of a bloody rivalry between Viking’s gang of thugs and the Ute drug dealers.

There’s one big battle at the end, with one more bad guy to be killed in a way that will have you in stitches.

ALL THE LIGHT YOU CANNOT SEE

A blind girl sends secret radio messages warning the French resistance of German advances on her town, while waiting for the Americans to liberate them.

She is aided by a disillusioned young German soldier.

Mark Ruffalo plays her father and Hugh Lorie her uncle.

This is one great, inspirational story about World War II that is sure to move you as you cheer for the girl.

Rhode Islander Aria Mia Lamberti, who had never acted before, beat out thousands for the role.

The movie will hold you spellbound.

LIFE ON OUR PLANET

Morgan Freeman narrates this educational documentary series that will teach you things you never learned in school.

Using real-life and computer made scenes of plants, animals and changes in earth, the movie is like nothing I  have ever witnessed before.

My cat sat next to me for a half hour watching the dinosaurs with even blinking.

Me too.
