Janice L. Slater, 90, of Warwick, passed away on February 20, 2024, in Mount Vernon (Alexandria), VA.
She was predeceased by her husband Lester P. (Paul) Slater, Jr. Mother of LCDR Neysa M. Slater-Chandler, USNR (Ret.), and her husband MAJ Daniel K. Chandler, USA (Ret.) of Mount Vernon, VA. Sister of Kenneth J. Moore and his wife Marjorie, owners of Cortana Corporation, and family of Arlington, VA.
A resident of Warwick, Janice was born in Lowell, MA, on April 9, 1933 (Palm Sunday) to James J. Moore, Jr., and Agnes (Cassidy) Moore. Her father was a Navy veteran of World War I and a New Bedford police officer before joining the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles as an investigator in Norfolk County. The family moved to various posts throughout the Commonwealth as his career progressed to Head of the Cape Cod and Islands Office and eventually taking him to Boston as the Supervising Hearings Officer. Her mother was an RN and night supervisor at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Lowell. She later volunteered as a special duty nurse to family, neighbors, and friends.
Janice attended the State Teachers College at Bridgewater, now Bridgewater State University, earning her B.Ed. She received a master’s in education from the State Teachers College at Boston and completed all work for the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study at Rhode Island College. She taught in the highly regarded Dedham School system before moving to Warwick, where she taught first grade at Sherman Elementary School and trained other teachers. After stepping away for family duties, she volunteered as both a fifth grade CCD teacher and substitute teacher for Saint Timothy School in Warwick.
Janice enthusiastically supported her husband’s busy work and travel schedule during his 35 years with the U.S. General Accounting Office. A true public servant, she also supported her daughter’s military and federal government careers. A foreign car enthusiast, she could diagnose car problems just by listening or driving the troubled vehicle, likely as a result of her upbringing when she often accompanied her father on accident investigations and from the hundreds of thousands of miles she spent “chasing ice” in support of her daughter’s figure skating. She was active in the R.I. Youth Philharmonic, U.S. Figure Skating, Warwick Figure Skaters, the U.S. Naval Academy Parents and Athletic Associations, and in later years enjoyed events at the Army and Navy Club on Farragut Square in Washington, DC, and at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate.
Her funeral will be held on March 1, 2024, from Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Timothy Church, 1799 Warwick Avenue, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited and may visit at the funeral home on March 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in historic Swan Point Cemetery, 585 Blackstone Boulevard, Providence.
