I will talk about my history, my name is Robert Carlow I am the President of Greenwood Volunteer Fire Company and Museum for the last 12 years or more.  My father was a firefighter, I recently retired as a firefighter and now my son is a firefighter, and we are all members of the Greenwood Fire Company.

But this is not about my family, it’s our Greenwood Fire family. People from all walks of life combining their talents help us grow and improve. Of course, we have retired firefighters who help fill in blanks on large selection of photographs to full time fire fighters who help when they can assist with various projects.

We also have longtime members, Joan Lowder who puts this first sometimes before herself and continues to play an active role. Many widows belong here from former firefighters that help give the museum a human touch. Newcomer Donna Grossguth took on the chairperson position and organized our 100th anniversary monumental event.  She took on the job with no previous involvement, but her skills helped make the 100th event a success.  Diane Davison has taken the Board Position of Greenwood’s Treasurer from her brother John D. Onofrio. They both grew up down the street and used to hang around the fire station playing outside and talking to the firefighters on duty. Other members like Art Fontaine joined and became our building committee chairman.

There are many other members who contribute to the success of Greenwood.  All these members bring a sense of commitment to making something better for all their reasons, but one reason is common keeping Greenwood Volunteer Fire alive. Their efforts I could spend hours talking about that contribute to the success of Greenwood I cannot put into this one article.

So much has been accomplished in the last 12 years when the closed our doors for good because of a lack of commitment. Now things have changed because of committed members and having events such as open houses, school tours and yes taking the fire engines out to work them like did a long time ago.

Our family has a lot to offer in the city we love, so if you’re looking to join and bring whatever you have to offer, everyone is welcome. We have card nights, bingo and crafts shows to create a social atmosphere. We welcome all to join to get that feeling like this is a place to come and help, but to enjoy. Making new friends and becoming part of our Greenwood family. It takes us all to do what we do, a group effort, not any person, so come join our team, there will be a place for you.
