Pilgrim senior track jumper Dasani Stewart made her long-anticipated college commitment official this week, signing to compete with the Division I Bryant Bulldogs next season.

The All-Stater is arguably the most decorated track athlete in school history, taking home multiple top-5 finishes in the indoor and outdoor track state championships in the long jump, high jump and triple jump, including a first-place finish in the long jump this past winter. Stewart holds the school record in the triple jump, and is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in the long jump and triple jump.

Stewart is also a standout soccer player and is a member of the softball team as well.

Stewart made things official when she signed on the dotted line on Tuesday morning in front of friends, family and coaches at Pilgrim. She was relieved to complete the process and to begin her preparations for the next level.

“It means a lot. I committed really late in the game so to make it official takes a lot of pressure off my back,” said Stewart, who was impressed by the Bryant campus in nearby Smithfield. “Getting on the campus and seeing how beautiful it was, getting to meet the girls was great.”

One of her focuses will be building strength this offseason. Stewart’s numbers her senior year would already place her at the top of the Bryant roster, but she is looking forward to improving even further and getting a chance to compete against the country’s best.

“I’m going to start going to the gym a lot, start trying to build some muscles in my legs to be one of the top jumpers at Bryant. I’m hoping to face a lot of good competition, at high school I’m No. 1, so I’m looking forward to competing against that level of competition,” Stewart said.

Pilgrim will be well-represented at this weekend’s RIIL Outdoor Track & Field State Championships. Stewart is a favorite to win another state title in the jump events, and possibly multiple medals this time around as she wraps up her final high school go-around.

Stewart is thrilled to have been able to experience being a state champion and be a leader on the team.

“It’s great to see my hard work pay off. To be a state champion means a lot, being an underclassman, beating the older girls takes a lot, now to be one of the older girls feels great,” Stewart said.

“She’s one of the best female athletes I’ve seen in my 50 years of coaching,” said Pilgrim track coach Tom Dolce. “I’m proud of her, she’s done a good job.”
