Lincoln Smith captured this image of heavy equipment at the end of a day’s work to build a more resilient shoreline on Oakland Beach facing Brush Neck Cove. The work includes the removal of foundations and pier pilings, remnants from storms and hurricanes, replenishment of the cove beach with an area for launching kayaks and canoes The project is made possible with a 2018 $400,000 Department of Environmental grant that is being matched with $260,000 from a city Community Development Block Grant from the federal government. The work being done by Cardi Construction includes a paved parking lot, benches and a “beach mat” to provide handicapped accessibility to the shore. The area was hit particularly hard by a December storm with an accompanying tidal surge that swept away a portion of Strand Avenue.
