Dolores Newberry, of Warwick, recently celebrated her 80th birthday at home in her sunroom with dozens of close friends and family members. The guest of honor was surprised to learn that her daughters orchestrated this milestone celebration in secret. Her eldest, Carol Newberry of Cranston, catered the event along with her daughter Stephenie; her middle daughter, Debra Bolduc of Ashaway, handled the invitations, favors and preparations; and her youngest daughter, Elisabeth Galligan of East Providence, waited on guests and was in charge of making sure Mrs. Newberry was ready for the occasion. Minutes before the event, the daughters decided to warn her that a lot of people would soon be arriving and, with that, the doorbell began to ring and the party was underway. Guests noshed on bite-sized lavender scones, pastiche, cucumber tea sandwiches, and other appetizers and enjoyed an assortment of beverages including hot tea, coffee and – the most popular – pink lemonade. Framed photographs of Dolores from throughout the various decades of her life were on display in the dining room for all to see. A highlight was the four-part harmonic entertainment from the a capella singing group, “Generations Barbershop Quartet” – named the busiest barbershop quartet in New England for the past two consecutive years. They delighted the crowd with various songs and sing-a-longs from yesteryear, including the traditional “Happy Birthday” and even an attempt at “Hello Dolly!”
