Authorities from Cranston and Coventry continue to investigate the death of a man whose body was pulled from the Pawtuxet River on Wednesday.
According to a statement, police and fire personnel received a report of a missing swimmer in the area of the Arkwright Bridge, which spans the river on the Coventry line, just before 5 p.m.
The 27-year-old – identified as Alexander Higham of West Warwick – is said to have been swimming with friends when he began to show signs of being in distress. The friends attempted to assist him, but were unsuccessful.
Cranston and Hope fire personnel immediately entered the water in search of the missing man, and officials from Warwick, Central Coventry, South Kingstown, and Smithfield joined the effort shortly thereafter. Cranston personnel located Higham’s body in approximately 10 feet of water roughly 90 minutes later.
