The captain and crew of Wistful, an S class sailboat built by Herreshoff, were presented the Commodore’s Cup at the Herreshoff Museum following the Aug. 24 Rendezous Regatta in Bristol. Wistful, hull #14, was given to John Migliaccio by his father, Dr. Anthony Migliaccio, as a graduation gift in 1963 when he completed four years at Colgate. Migliaccio’s love for the boat developed when the family owned a summer home in Conimicut and John watched the boats from the Rhode Island and Edgewood Yacht Clubs competing. At one point, Nat Nazareth, a neighbor who owned a boat named Red Head, asked John to crew and he was smitten. “It was all over – I was hooked on the S Class, the people, the crew team work and the thrill of each and every race,” said John. “I knew all the S boat names, spinnaker colors and skippers. My brother Tony raced in the national one-design class and my father towed many local boats to regattas most every weekend. The regattas at that time often drew over 300 boats, including 15 to 20 S Boats, which were recognized to be at the very top of all bay sailing competition.” Wistful was back out there for the 50th reunion and rally on Aug. 24. And making the trophy presentation is Stephan Sloan, commodore of the S Class, at left, with crew members Jim Howe, Kim Hunt, Leo Migliaccio (the youngest crew member and John’s grandson), skipper John Migliaccio and his son, Jay.
