Titans fall to Thunderbirds

The Toll Gate field hockey team dropped a pair of games when it fell to Cranston 3-2 then Smithfield 3-0.

Kayley Carreiro got the Titans on the board against Cranston, but the Thunderbirds rebounded to score twice to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth quarter. Delanie Wheeler scored the tying goal with 6:48 remaining, but Cranston’s Lily Tillinghast responded by putting away the game-winner just over three minutes later. It was Tillinghast’s first goal of the game while Elizabeth Biegel scored two as well.

“I just said, ‘we need to be on the same brainwaves and get this goal back,” said Tillinghast, who is thrilled to see the team surging early as it looks to compete for a championship.

The Titans turned around to face Smithfield on Monday and Sentinels wrapped up the shutout win. Toll Gate goalie Abigail O’Connor finished with seven saves in the cage for the Titans.

The Titans dropped to 1-3 with the losses and sat in fourth place in Division III. They were back in action on Wednesday night when they traveled to Woonsocket, but the results were not available at press time.

Toll Gate’s win came in a 5-1 decision over Tiverton on opening night. Lauren Bastien led the way with four goals while Wheeler scored another. O’Connor made seven stops in the win.
