Two stars are born— and one reborn—in PPAC’s “Funny Girl”

Katerina McCrimmon brought down the house at the Providence Performing Arts Center last week with her magnificent portrayal of Fanny Bryce in the revival of Broadway’s hit show, “Funny Girl”.

Remember the name, because this talented young lady is not only an outstanding actress, but she can also sing like a star, bringing the PPAC audience to their feet in her rendition of “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”.

McCrimmon hits the high notes as good or better than Streisand did, sounding a bit like her, but not trying to copy her.

No doubt she is star material.

We interviewed Izaiah Montaque Harris, who played Eddie Ryan in the show and learned about his tap-dancing abilities. Last week we saw them firsthand and also saw what a good actor and singer he is.

And then there was singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester whom we remember from her (and our) younger days, on stage to play Fanny Bryce’s mother and show, with the hit showing that she can still belt out a tune, and act as well.

“Funny Girl” kicked off what looks like a great season at PPAC, with the hit show “Mrs. Doubtfire” next.
